TxDOT Project & Brick Pavers

Planned Changes to Downtown Cooper in 2026

Overview of TxDOT Project

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced plans to implement several changes to the downtown Cooper area in 2026. A significant aspect of this project involves the removal of the historic 1918 brick pavers. These modifications will affect parts of SH 154 (east and west) and BU 24 (north and south) as they cross through downtown. Notably, the original brick pavers will continue to remain in the center of the square and along other streets.

Preservation and Salvage Efforts

The Delta County Historical Commission, working in collaboration with local officials and TxDOT engineers, is coordinating a project to salvage as many whole bricks as possible during the removal process. The intention is to repurpose these bricks in both public and private settings within Delta County, ensuring that the historical value is preserved.

Community Participation

Community involvement is essential for the hand removal of the bricks. Groups or individuals interested in participating are required to submit a designated form for consideration and approval regarding the proposed use of the salvaged bricks. The deadline for submission is March 2, 2026.

The application is accessible for download below.  Additionally, hard copies of the form are available at the Delta County Library.

Project Phasing and Traffic Flow

TxDOT has structured the project into four distinct phases. This approach is designed to maintain the flow of traffic throughout the course of the work.
