Delta County's boards and commissions, and the volunteers serving on them, play an important role in ensuring that the Commissions Court is able to pass policies that serve the needs of the public by presenting the Commissions Court with all available information and serving as a representative for the public. The members of Delta County's boards and commissions exercise important civic responsibilities and promote good government while ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of services to the public. The Commissioners Court makes appointments to various boards and commissions, as required by statute, including the following:
- The local property tax system follows the principle of checks and balances. An appraisal district is a political subdivision of the state that is governed by a board of directors. Voting member taxing entities are entitled to vote on the appointment of members to the board of directors following a nomination process by the taxing entities. If the county tax assessor-collector is not appointed to the board, the county assessor-collector serves as a nonvoting director. The board of directors has required duties and authority under Texas law. Tax Code Chapter 6 contains much of the statutory authority for boards of directors. An appraisal district board of directors hires the chief appraiser, sets the budget and appoints the appraisal review board members. The directors have no authority to set values or appraisal methods. The chief appraiser carries out the appraisal district’s legal duties, hires the staff, makes the appraisals and operates the appraisal office.
- The Delta County Historical Commission was established to preserve, protect, and promote the rich history of Delta County. The Commission initiates actions and cooperates with state and local programs to encourage awareness of historic preservation and foster appreciation of Delta County's historical significance.
